States and regional exceptions
New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. In participating areas, the usual changes fall on the first Sunday in October and the first Sunday in April.
Broken Hill follows central time, including daylight saving, rather than Sydney’s time. Lord Howe Island changes by thirty minutes. Those exceptions are why every place in the calculator has an IANA timezone.
Reading the sun calendar
Every city shows the offset for the selected date and its next scheduled clock change. All sunrise, sunset and twilight times are already local; do not add another hour yourself.
Countdowns use actual elapsed seconds. The calendar changes offsets on the transition date, and daylight duration is calculated across the real local day. Future legislation can change the schedule, so the timezone version is shown on every city page.
